Oral health and dental needs of people with Autism: an online survey
Please note, this study is now finished.
Children, adolescents and young people with autism are a vulnerable and high-risk group for oral health problems. The nature of autism presents with difficulties in language, communication, social and mental thinking. People with autism may have problems taking care of themselves, communicating their needs and understanding the medical, dental and functional needs of maintaining good oral health. In Australia, currently, little is known about oral health, dental needs and barriers of people with autism. This is a unique study that aims to determine oral health status and better understand the dental needs, dental experience and barriers that people with autism face with daily oral hygiene and when seeking dental services. In addition, the survey seeks to find out about overall health and quality of life of people with autism or their carer's.
This research project involved the completion of a once-off online survey.
